Ed Gotkin stormed from the small conference room, leaving the smug, ignorant Meghan Brindle at his back. Not since he was sixteen, standing in front of his mother after sneaking the car out of the garage without permission and backing into the neighbor’s mailbox, had someone shorter than him given him a browbeating. It was embarrassing and infuriating, especially after her guard dog handled him like a rag doll. He should have insisted his personal security detail come in with him instead of volunteering them to augment the eyes in the auditorium for the president’s speech.

That woman and her entire crew of advisors and Cabinet members spelled death for the country in terms of national security and world standing. Brindle didn’t understand China, Russia, and every Islamic State in the world needed to be kept in check, and the United States was the only nation capable of doing so. She was pulling out American presence from Africa, west and central Asia, and eastern Europe, leaving Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean as the only jump point between theaters.

Her plan was dangerous, creating a massive gap in intelligence gathering in Russia’s and China’s proxy countries—Cuba, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Libya, North Korea, Iran, and Iraq. She seemed incapable of learning from the hard-learned lessons from the Khobar Towers, the USS Cole, the twin towers, the Pentagon, and a dozen U.S. embassies around the world. But Ed wouldn’t let her dishonor the memory of those who died to teach her those very lessons, including that of his only son, who was one of nineteen airmen killed in Dhahran in the Khobar bombing. The pain of losing him still stung more than a quarter century later, and he was determined to prevent other parents from suffering the pain he’d endured because of a lack of intelligence gathering on the ground.

Ed texted his security detail, telling them to meet him at the control point inside the Secret Service secured zone for the president and her entourage. Once they linked up again and started marching toward his waiting Town Car, he regained his confidence and sense of importance. Today would be the last time Meghan Brindle embarrassed him. Despite what she’d said about picking the wrong woman to intimidate, she’d picked the wrong man to piss off. She may hold the highest office in the land, but he had the right friends in the right places.

After boarding his Town Car in the back with his security team in the front, Ed scrolled through his contacts list until he found the number that could change the course of the country. He dialed, but the call went to voicemail. He opted to hang up and send a text message to keep his guards from hearing what he had in mind. He typed out a text and hit send. We have a problem, Need to talk ASAP. Money is no object in solving it.
